WELCOME TO DEER COUNTRY
THE PREMISE
"May you find your worth in the Waking World..."

You're in the ocean and you're surrounded by others like you. You do not know where you are going nor where you have come from but you know you're happy to be on the journey. You know that something new is coming. Something terrible and wonderful and ugly and beautiful and painful and pleasurable. You are being reborn into a new life...So what will you make of it?

You wake up on a black beach and you are home. You can feel your body reshaping, changing back to the one you once knew, and you are home. You can feel something new humming beneath your skin, strange energy you aren't familiar with, and you are home.

You can feel them watching you. From above, from below, from within. You are not alone in this new place. They know you have arrived. They know you have been reborn. Welcome to the Waking World. Fear the old blood, fear the new blood, and pity the spilled. Will you be able to survive the terrors of the night and the sightless horrors that stalk the city?

THE GAME

Are you a monster fucker? Do you love found family tropes because you're agonizingly lonely and have never known family yourself? Do you get a thrill every time there's an unrealistic amount of bloodshed in anything? This might just be the game for you.

This is a panfandom medium-fast paced game with monthly mod-designed events. There is no "core story" but there will be information about various elements of the game released through events and TDMs. This game is more focused on worldbuilding/community building and most storytelling elements will be to enhance the lore of the world such as certain histories of Pthumerians or blood types, etc.

This game is the second chapter to our first game [community profile] deerington. While there is direct connection, influence and inspiration between Chapter 1 and Chapter 2, you do not need to be familiar with Chapter 1 to enjoy or play Chapter 2. We eagerly accept brand new players and Deerington-oblivious players into the fold!

Deer Country is an intense horror game with heavy inspiration from Bloodborne, Dark Souls, H.P Lovecraft, Stephen King, and Junji Ito. The game primarily deals with blood and body horror, psychological horror, thalassophobia, themes of eldritch monsters and cults, reincarnation, and existential dread. Despite the game's power system and lore being based on blood, themes of disease will largely be supernaturally based (ie; lycanthropy and vampirism being considered 'sicknesses' rather than things like the common cold or cancer). Medical themes may still be present through blood ministration but this not intended to be a plague game regardless of how common words like "disease" or "sick" may be used in descriptors.

It can be safely assumed that every page and event has some detail of these horrors mentioned throughout. If our information pages cause you discomfort then this game may not be for you.

We do not recommend this game to people interested in a low-level horror slice of life game. While there will be plenty of low-stress prompts through the mingle-interactions on events, the game takes place in a naturally horrifying atmosphere and it would be contradictory for any character to consistently ignore that.

The setting naturally allows for characters to accept that they have been given a new timeline and a chance at a new life. This is to encourage tropes of found family in a terrible situation and the game is designed to inspire the playerbase to create an authentic community with their characters. The idea is for this to feel like a Forever Home to many characters as it plays with the idea of reincarnation, multiple lives, and what you can do with a new opportunity. The intention is to remove the struggle of "I must go back home / save the world I came from / find my family" since characters will know they are a unique diversion that won't have any negative or positive influence on their old lives.

Events will have a Mingle, Mystery, Monster feeling to them which should allow characters to explore the world calmly, violently, or intelligently. This world is plagued with beasts and dark blood magic and there will be numerous challenges, physical and psychological, characters will need to struggle against. The desired outcome is to not go back home but to protect their current home and their current family. The desired outcome is to have a new home and a new reason.

THE SETTING
This technically takes place in a post-apocalyptic version of earth that has been renamed The Waking World. Humanity has been completely reshaped to adjust to the new world and while you can see obvious influence from pre-apocalyptic cultures, the old world has largely been forgotten beyond aesthetics. The geological shape of landmasses around the world has completely changed and countries as we know them no longer exist.

Deer Country is a large continent that has some of the most developed cities functioning in the post-apocalypse world. Deer Country was named after the deer that seem to protect the people throughout the country. This has resulted in religious worship of deer and deep respect towards the animal. Deer Country is believed to have once been made up of Ireland, England, Scotland, and the Nordic countries smashed up against New England , but this theory is mostly based on the general climate and terrain of Deer Country. Some Waking World historians believe that it's impossible to tell what Deer Country used to be since the Nightmare had so fundamentally changed the world that it made most countries unrecognizable.

Sleepers wake up in the advanced city of Trench which is a popular trade route in the new world. It is one of the safest places to live. Its aesthetic is largely inspired by trends seen throughout the 1600-1800s, ranging from Rococo, Baroque, Romance, Victorian, Gothic Revival, and other such movements. While there is a large Eurocentric presence, the city itself is incredibly diverse and aesthetics and art movements from other cultures from around the 1600-1800s can be seen throughout the city.

Despite the old-fashioned style, this is still technically a city set in the future of a post-apocalypse world a few millennia after our own timeline. People in this world have been gifted with unique, advanced technology by Pthumerians and Sleepers for centuries now, and have used it to advance society. This can primarily be seen through Lunar Energy, the renewable, eco-friendly, magic-based energy that is used to generate power in the city of Trench. In many ways, this game is as much of a science fiction game as it is horror, but with a drastically different rendering than you would anticipate in a regular science fiction setting.
