DEER COUNTRY GLOSSARY
CODING
Here's a list of all the key terms used throughout the game. Please use this as a point of reference for helping to contextualize unfamiliar phrases. Use CTRL+F for a quick search.
TERMINOLOGY
Beasthood: When corruption has reached the bloodstream. This will physically change a character’s body into a beastlike creature. Player choice as to what this looks like. Characters can be brought back from beasthood but it is exceedingly difficult the longer it takes. Characters may also continually switch back and forth between corruption and beasthood. Beasts can look and act like anything but should generally be monstrous in appearance.
Blessed Day: Every Sleeper has a Blessed Day. This can be their canonical birthday or another significant date in their lives (or a random date selected, tbh). Your chosen Blessed Day correlates to the Patron Pthumerian of whatever month your Blessed Day falls on (ie; if your Blessed Day is August 14th then your Patron Pthumerian is Mariana.)
Blood Types: Sleepers have unique blood types that allow them to wield varying degrees of magic and abilities. Sleepers can only have one blood type at a time and may change blood type once a year or during an event that allows as much.
Blood Pollution: This world runs on magic but also suffers because of magic. It is intentionally meant to be a paradox with no reasonable solution. Blood pollution is the open-spill of blood rotting the earth and the creatures upon it. It increases corruption and beasthood and is known from drawing in more monsters. To avoid blood pollution, make sure to avoid direct contact of blood-to-skin and kill responsibly.
Blood Ministration: The magical process of using blood as healing agents. This is considered the superior form of healing and most people who perform the service are known as Blood Ministers.
Bloodstones: Hardened stones collected from spilled blood. Can be used to enhance items, as trade items, and as decorative pieces.
Blood Enhancement: When bloodstones or wet blood is applied to a weapon or item to increase a certain stat on the weapon (ie; adding coldblood to a sword to make it an electric sword).
Calm: When a character is not influenced by corruption or beasthood. It is difficult to maintain a sense of calm, but not impossible.
Corruption: The process of mental stability depleting, causing most to become a different but still recognizable version of themselves. Blood pollution and negative experiences largely contribute to corruption. Some people may always be corrupt while others may fluctuate.
Doeit: Both an OOC and IC community. OOCly this is where we provide all information about our game. ICly, this is where characters can list their businesses and offer unique character profiles. The name is a play on “do it” and “duet” and the general app functions similarly to things like dating profiles, Craigslist, etc. This is recommended for those who want to advertise their character’s business for proper engagement. Not required.
DeerNet: The main network used to communicate on the Omni. DeerNet is essentially a combination of things like Youtube, Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, Reddit. People can hack accounts, have multiple accounts with different usernames, and can make messages private at any point. They can also use gifs and send videos they found browsing the web. Anything accessible online in our world is accessible on DeerNet.
DeerNet is both a server and an app on an Omni.
Deerington: The original setting of the first game and first chapter of the Deer series. Deerington was a small town in Maine that was overtaken by a Half-Pthumerian named Julia Sodder who quickly lost control of her reality-altering dream abilities. The first game was based on ending the nightmare.
Deer Country: The entire “country” in which Trench is a part of. Old world continents no longer exist due to the apocalypse so places like “North America” or “Germany” or “China” no longer exist. It would be difficult to determine what Deer Country used to be since there was a huge geological shift after the apocalypse. There are running theories that Trench/Deer Country might be a mixture of the Nordic countries, Ireland, and the United Kingdom.
Half-Pthumerian: Creatures born from a Pthumerian and another living creature. Most Half-Pthumerians are half-Pthumerian, half-human, but not all. Half-Pthumerians can usually be killed, unlike their full-blooded Pthumerian parent.
Lunar Orb: Glass balls that collect lunar energy and convert it into clean energy. Lunar orbs range greatly in size, but the rule of thumb is that the bigger an area, the bigger your lunar orb will need to be in order to properly power up. Can be purchased at the Architect’s Market.
Lunar Energy: Similar to Solar Energy, Lunar Energy is eco-friendly renewable energy collected by the moon and used as a way to power up homes with light/heating/ac, etc. Lunar energy can be used in a variety of ways if one understands how it functions.
Newsletters: An IC/OOC news article that provides very light information about the upcoming month, things like weather, mod announcements, and an opportunity for players to fill out impact reports and discuss what’s been going on in the comment section.
Old Ones: The Old Ones are a mysterious race arguably older than Pthumerians and where Pthumerian culture and magic may have come from. Pthumerians believe the entire universe and every timeline was created by the Old Ones.
Omen: An animal-shaped companion who has heightened intelligence and awareness of its immediate surroundings. Omens maintain a unique connection to one specific Sleeper and seem to be conjured by the Sleeper’s blood magic. Omens cannot die. If a Sleeper leaves the game, the Omen vanishes with them. If a Sleeper dies in the game, an Omen will wait by the body or by the sea until their Sleeper has returned.
Omni: The communication device all Sleepers are provided with upon entering the game. These devices are capable of regular smartphone uses and can access various web browsers. You can take video/audio/text/still images with an Omni.
Patron Pthumerian: Unusually strong Pthumerians who have decided to rule over specific concepts and blood types. They bless all Sleepers who enter the game and each Sleeper has a "Blessed Day." Patron Pthumerians can be related to the likeness of zodiac signs except without the strict correlation to birthdates/personality traits. While you can choose to correlate to birthdays/personalities, it is not required.
Pthumerian: An eldritch race of mostly feminine creatures that come from an Oceanic world known as Pthumeria. Pthumerians usually have two forms: humanoid and abomination. Many have incredible abilities that vary from Pthumerian to Pthumerian. They have their own language but are capable of speaking with Sleepers and humans.
Principles: Trench has a social division known as the “Principles” which is divided up into those who value pleasure and those who value practicality. This is culturally significant throughout the town but there are many instances of principles being blended by characters who don’t necessarily care about either.
Pthumerian Storms: A storm conjured specifically by a Pthumerian. This can either be a Pthumerian’s actual ability kicking up or the consequences of Pthumerians messing around in the skies and ocean. This can result in things like red lightning storms or strange green fire falling from the skies. Pthumerian storms will occur during game-wide events. Storms may go beyond weather and impact Sleepers in other unusual ways such as coating the city in pollen.
Rebirth/Born Anew: The process of Sleepers being reborn through a Sleeper Squid and coming back to life from death experienced in game, or coming to the setting for the first time after acceptance.
Sleeper: All playable characters apped and accepted into the game.
Sleeper Squid: A Sleeper’s new “true” form.
Trench: An advanced post-apocalypse city that has been standing for centuries now. Heavily based off of 1600-1800s aesthetic but you can still find some modern luxuries here and there. Citizens of Trench are either called Trenchies or civilians or citizens. Language is flexible.
Waker: People who help Sleepers “wake up” from their squid forms. Can be regular citizens of Trench or other Sleepers.
The Waking World: The entire earth is considered the “Waking World” since it was completely impacted by Sodder’s dream. People would not typically use the word “earth” anymore. It is considered outdated and inaccurate language even if people would know what you’re trying to say.
